CHAPTER 4: Using Audio Recordings to Capture Powerful Moments
- Solana shared the experience: Charlotte, a student who moved back to Italy, sent a message to the class and they all heard it together, sometimes students play the audio again to remember their friend
- Sofi shared how she recorded her students saying the morning routine
- Paty talked about how she used an audio as a self-assessment for reading. She recorded a boy reading a book and then they both listened to the audio and the boy noticed words that he skips and other observations
- Tina asked the staff if we are willing to try using an ipod instead of a camera.. some teachers agreed that it would be a good idea since it’s much easier to use an iPhone/iPod instead of an iPad or big camera (to record or takes photos)
- We watched a video that Solana shared of a student talking about the importance of going to the Green March. After that Tina mentioned how the audio itself was very powerful. Pili commented on the different skills that the child develops when she’s exposed to audio file instead of a video. A lot of teachers agreed that children need to practice listening skills and that they are over exposed to screen.
- · Students don’t listen to radio; they’re not used to paying attention to audio. It’s hard for them to concentrate if they don’t have a visual cue.
- Teachers want more Apps to practice this skill
- Gaby O. mentioned that there are a lot of resources about identifying sounds on YouTube
- Rosas talked about telling stories without pictures to stimulate the child´s imagination. Alondra reports that she is doing it already, using the SEP books.
- Paty mentioned that kinder teachers have a set of cards with short stories and three questions on the back, to practice listening comprehension.
- Gaby O. mentioned the Apps: Read and Record and Kids Stories (already bought them/Kids Stories is sold by book)
- Alondra shared her documentation of “Building community using audio files between classrooms.”
- Nuñez mentioned that audio is very useful when you’re working with students that have speech problems as an intervention
- Tina shared how she used the Apps: Book Creator and SonicPics. Teachers showed interest in creating ebooks. (bought them).
